There are many great things to do in Akron, Ohio! This city is situated south of the bigger metropolitan area of Cleveland. The Akron Art museum is planning to re-open July 23rd, 2020. The museum has many exhibits and collects objects from 1850 up to present day. Currently, their exhibit is “Objects to be Destroyed.”
Outside they have a garden for people to enjoy a walk with some fresh air and greenery while visiting the city. Throughout the year, the museum rotates exhibits and hosts events. They are going to be offering free admission (due to having to have limited capacity until the end of October 2020). Check out their website to see their events, both in person and virtual.
The nature realm is a network of trails just outside the city of Akron to the northeast. It is one of the best places to take a walk or a run in the area. There are several different trails that you can take, ranging from .6 miles to up to 3 miles. You can combine trails if you are looking to walk or run farther. Also at the nature realm is a visitors center, a scenic pond, and a rock and herb garden.
The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs from downtown Akron, all the way to the Cuyahoga national park. Come and take a 2-3 hour train ride through small towns and through the national park! Board the train at one of four different locations in the area: Rockside Station, Boston Mill Station, Penninsula Depot, and Akron Northside Station. You can also get off the train at stops at Boston Mill Visitor Center and the historic village of Peninsula. During the evening, board the train for a dinner date on the train for a four course meal and complementary bar service. Bonus: they offer a polar express train ride in December for the kids!
You can visit Hale Farm and Village during your visit to the scenic railroad, as it is right around the corner. The Hale village has 34 historic buildings built over 8 generations. During the year they host 4 popular events: Music in the Valley, Hale Farm Car Meet, Civil War Reenactment, and Made In Ohio Art & Craft Festival. They also host holiday lantern tours in December. Come take a self guided tour of a manor and historical home that is open to the public! This hall and gardens is a National Historic Landmark and is one of the biggest historic homes open to the public. Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is 70 acres! It includes an estate with five historic buildings and also has 10 gardens. Here, they also offer several events including times when you can walk your dog through the estate, summer camp, and even yoga in the garden.
